The Importance of Koi Feeding

Posted by on February 25, 2009

It is very important to know the basic rules of feeding koi.The next step is really important.  It is recommended how and when to feed these delicate yet lovely fishes and what are the types of food that is all right to feed them.

Koi Diet

You can buy the food in different “pet-shops”. It comes in different varieties that you can choose from: it comes in flakes, pelleted or extruded, pond stick formulae. While these kinds of food are all right, other types of food can be given as a sort of treat just to break the monotonous regimen of feeding koi. You can feed them bread (must be in moderate portions), whole lettuce, wedges of orange, watermelon slices, cultured earthworm and prawns. This is an easy way to give the koi some change and make them feel good.

Be careful of the different types of food and there is also food which can derogate the koi. It it also important to avoid food like, peas, sweet corn and potatoes. Foods that are high in solid fats are also the ones to be avoided, especially meat and dairy products like cheese.

Here is a fact about koi: they do not have stomachs. They digest their food through the long gut, and the more they are going to eat, the more time it will take for them to digest it. This happens especially when climate is cold or at low temperatures. The food will be eaten, and then it will be partly digested inside the digestive system, and then drop the unwanted loading in the biofilter.

Feeding Koi the right food and time

In feeding koi, you need to be dependent in the temperature. It is never a problem for koi keepers that are living in a tropical climate, as they can feed them all year round. When you are living in a northern climate, where it snows and gets cold in the autumn and winter, you need to know the preferred food in different seasons.

When the temperature rises to 50 degree Fahrenheit, it is recommended to feed the koi with easy-to-digest sinking pellet that are wheat germ based. Switch to higher protein-enriched floating foods when the temperature rises further. When the temperature is shooting down, slip back to wheat germ based foods before cutting the food feeding for the hibernation period. This is when the koi’s metabolism slows down and the energy stored in them is going to be used all throughout winter.

A lot of people do not even care as to how much is the amount of food to be fed per day: the recommended amount is between one and two percent of the body each day. There are other people who apply the 5 minute rule: the process of which is to feed them at a certain amount and let them eat for five minutes, after five minutes, cut back the amount if there is leftovers.

Should You Have Koi and Goldfish Together

Posted by on February 25, 2009

A very common question for people building a new pond is whether or not it is good to have koi and goldfish together in the same pond.

Perhaps you have already built your backyard pond and have included both koi and goldfish in your beautiful new koi pond. If you have yet to build that pond, the good news is that you’re thinking before you act. There are so many problems that you can avoid if you take the time to learn from others mistakes and experiences, both good and bad..

Goldfish are very good at making babies. Some people even compare them to rabbits or gerbils. The problem with this is that the babies are vulnerable to becoming both koi and goldfish food. One possible solution is to make sure there are plenty of places for the tiny fishes to hide from the larger snack loving koi. The size and depth of your pond will make a difference as to how many babies if any survive. However, most times you’ll probably find they disappear into the fish bellies of your koi or goldfish.

Although koi are a favorite of pond building enthusiasts, goldfish are a wonderful pond pet and can bring a lot of colorful joy as well. They are also less expensive to purchase. Many people discover their feeder goldfish survive to grow quite large in their ponds too. Another good point of deciding on goldfish instead of koi is that you will not have to worry about the koi eating the fins or bubble eyes of certain goldfish species.

If you would like a worry free fish environment. One where all the fish are going to get along, the easy answer is to choose between koi and goldfish. There are pros and cons to each species. If that solution is just not good enough and you are bound and determined to try having both in the same pond, keep the following ideas in your head. Do not buy the species of goldfish that have big eyeballs as the koi will probably eat them. And lastly, consider any babies born as feeder fish and part of the circle of life. It happens, get over it. Or um… you know, the other suggestion of “not” having both koi and goldfish in the same pond.

Many people enjoy having both koi and goldfish together in the same pond. What works for one pond, may not work for another. You’ll find more EZ Pond Ideas and tips at our EZ Pond Ideas website.

Imagine if you have a fish tank of your own, you don’t have to waste time anymore in investing for some cleaners for your aquarium.

Futhermore, a Hermit Crabs pet can also be very pleasing and entertaining to look at. They walk funny and they can even interact with people. Why are they called hermit crabs, by the way? It’s because these teeny weeny animals will dispose of its ”home” on its back while they grow larger in time and will look for larger shells, shells that are owned by other animals such as seasnails and mollusks. That’s why they are called “hermit crabs”. Now, all over and across the country (and maybe across the world), many pet fish lovers and sea creature lovers have their own hermit crab or even more.

And if you will learn how to take care of them, they can even outlive your dog or your cat. Average healthy hermit crabs can live for more than 20 years or so. Is that amazing or what? And they can really be cute and you have to believe that the longer they are around you, the more they become cute.
